WASHINGTON 4-A ACADEMY

An Alternative Learning Environment for the Texarkana Arkansas School District

4 A’s – Attendance – Attitude – Academics – Achievement

Enrollment: Serving approximately 85 – 100 students;

students enrolled in TAVC vocational classes;

students are in the work program;

students participate in varsity sports at Arkansas 

High School

  • Serves grades 9 – 12 with an emphasis on the inpidual student needs. Each student receives a comprehensive evaluation upon acceptance in order to establish an inpidualized graduation plan.
  • All of the teachers are certified as well as highly qualified. There is a certified special education teacher and a certified counselor on staff. The student ratio is on average in the classroom is 12: 1.
  • The curriculum at Washington 4 A Academy is aligned with the Arkansas State frameworks; in conjunction with the Learning Institute assessments, pacing guides, and other resources, the students receive a highly rigorous curriculum with high expectations.

Washington 4 A Academy purpose is to provide

  • An alternative choice for educating TASD students;
  • Provide needed assistance to at-risk students;
  • Provide an option for credit recovery to enable students to have an opportunity for graduation;
  • Increase student achievement and success in the learning environment;
  • Provide vocational opportunities to students to help provide career options;
  • Incorporate technology in the classroom to help promote the success of all students; with computer based/teacher instruction recovery programs;

Washington 4 A Academy provides social, educational, and work related activities for students:

  • College campus tours – Texarkana College, Texas A & M University – Texarkana, University of Arkansas – Hope, University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff, Southern Arkansas University – Magnolia
  • Dress for Success program – students dress for where they are going, in terms of their future profession, to give students a chance to goal set.
  • Job Shadowing Program – Students are allowed to shadow the Director and Counselor at Washington 4 A – (students selected from the Dress for Success program)
  • Daily 40 minute advisory period – Character education program is taught, motivational speakers are brought in, ACT advisement; math and literacy remediation, etc.
  • Arts Smart campus – Artist from TRACH integrate the arts into the classroom.
  • Community service opportunities;
  • Occupational/Vocational centers visits – Nursing program, Culinary Arts program, Cosmetology program, Welding program and auto mechanic program;
  • Interview skills seminars;
  • Workforce training;
  • Mentoring opportunities in our elementary schools
